Welcome to the Superhero Speech Room!

July 24, 2014

Superhero classroom decor

Kids love the superhero theme!

I’m using the superhero theme to decorate my superhero speech room for this coming school year and I’m pretty excited about it!!  I developed a package of superhero classroom decor and I can’t wait for my students to see it!  It’s designed not only to be fun and inviting but also to incorporate the “lingo” of educator effectiveness and common core standards.  My students especially love picking a superhero name tag and writing their name on it!  It’s a fun thing to do on the first day of speech.

Here’s some photos of the packet in use:

The Superhero theme is so motivating for our students!

Pow Bam Boom!
Welcome to the Superhero Speech  Room!

Here’s my superhero speech ladder to help students self-monitor their own progress.

Superhero speech ladder

How does the speech ladder work?

Each student has a wooden clothespin with their name on it.  As they make progress with their speech sounds, they can move their clip AND I give  them a ticket (included in the packet) that reads “I moved on the speech ladder.”  Here are the steps on the ladder, written in common-core  aligned “I can” statements:

I can say my sound.
I can say my sound with another sound.
I can say my sound in a word.
I can say my sound in 2-3  words.
I can say my sound in a sentence.
I can say my sound in a conversation.
I can say my sound everywhere I go!!

It’s a fun way for them to self-monitor their own progress!
Here’s a close-up of one of the steps on the speech ladder:

Speech Shields

I’m also using speech shields!  Educator effectiveness promotes students understanding the goal of classroom activities.  These are for students to write their primary speech and language goal and perhaps color or decorate them.  Here’s a sample of a finished speech shield:

I Can Statements

When writing “I can”  speech and language goals, keep it simple.  Use language your students will understand and remember.   These are not iep goals!  They are intended to help the student understand what they are working on in speech.
Here are some  examples;

I can follow directions.

I can use new words.

I can talk smoothly (fluency).

I can rhyme.

I can talk in sentences.

When my  students can tell me their goals, I’ll give  them  a  superhero ticket  that states, “I  knew my speech and language goal!”
I hope I’ve given you some ideas for classroom decor and for incorporating educator effectiveness and common core standards into it!  If you want to see more of the Superhero Speech classroom  decor,  click on this  link:  Superhero Speech Room

The packet now includes editable classroom decor!

If you purchase it, be sure to check out the preview pages (on the TPT website on the product page) for easy assembly directions and photographs!
