Digital Annotation on Google Classroom Speech Therapy

April 19, 2020

Digital annotatiion speech therapy homework google

Interested in more digital tools for google classroom speech therapy? Worksheets? Ho hum. Worksheets online? Fun! Distance Learning? YES! You can assign speech therapy homework to your students using your pdfs and have them complete it online with fun and interactive online writing tools known as digital annotation.

Kami is one free chrome app that you can use and it works with google drive and for google classroom speech therapy.

Digital annotation provides interactivity to speech therapy materials. In this context, annotation means the ability to create a digital layer of text, shapes, highlighter, and/or lines used to mark up a PDF document just as you would with a worksheet. These features, known as “annotation tools” open up tons of options for SLPs using pdfs on their tablets and computers for therapy activities.

Do you use google classroom for speech therapy. This blog post is for you! Are you new to google classroom? Check out my prior post on google classroom for SLPs! Are you wondering how to send homework to your students and have them get it back to you, completed? No worries, Kami to the rescue! You can send a homework assignment in Kami for your students to complete without ever using a printer or lifting a pen. In the image below, students are completing social skills homework from the “I’m done early social skills” packet.

What can students do with Kami and a “worksheet” from a pdf?

  1. Kami has a highlighting tool so students can highlight text in the pdf!
  2. Kami has a text box feature so students can write on the worksheets using text boxes!
  3. Kami has a shape tool. Students can circle answers to questions on digital pdfs!
  4. Kami has a drawing tool! Students can draw and even color on a pdf!

Can students use Kami to complete homework assigned by an SLP?

Yes, first you need to select pages from a pdf, rather than send the whole pdf. Why? Most sellers would prefer you not send an entire pdf to parents or students (be sure to check with the seller regarding their terms of use). Second, it’s too confusing to send the whole pdf and if parents/students are confused upon receipt of the pdf, chances of them completing it are reduced. Not sure how to do this? No worries, I’ve got you covered.

Check out my video tutorial on an easy way to select only a few pages of a pdf.

Can I email a Kami pdf to my students as an assignment?

Yes! Open up the assignment in Kami, write your instructions in a comment box and then share the Kami code with students via email or google classroom. Students can open the document upon receipt, click on the code link, and complete the homework online in Kami and return it to you without ever printing it out!

All of this is outlined in the youtube video that I have linked later in this post.

Can students do articulation homework with Kami?

Yes! On the Kami free version, you can adjust the stroke thickness and students can color in dots on “dot paint” activities! In the picture below, students are coloring the “dots” on my alligator and princesses dot articulation packet. They can even change the color of the dots!

Not hard at all. I’ve even made a video tutorial for you that walks you through the steps of using Kami! It shows you how to get the code to send the homework to your students.
